We believe in giving back to our community. Recently, we had the privilege of working with one of our community partners, Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln. They were building a new house for a very deserving family. Custom Blinds & Design, with locations in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska, decided it was the perfect opportunity to get involved by donating Hunter Douglas blinds for all of the windows.
“Our team was excited to help with this new home that was being constructed for Martha and her children,” said Sherri Tafoya, co-owner of Custom Blinds & Design.
Did you know that Habitat’s organization in Lincoln serves six families each year, and has more than 80 families who apply for housing?
The story of Martha’s quest to become a homeowner began when she left Sudan and moved to Lincoln. Martha works at a meat packing plant and cares for her six children. She also volunteers at the Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln Restore, building on her “sweat equity” toward homeownership. Families who apply to become a homeowner must meet criteria including living in crowded housing and unsafe conditions, have two years of steady income, and be able to pay the low-cost mortgage. Many people, including Martha, apply more than once because of the low number of families selected each year. Once a family is selected, they then participate in the construction process, from beginning to end.
On the day the keys were handed to Martha and her children, they were surrounded by the Sudanese community from Lincoln who sang a dedication song. It is comforting to know that she and her children will now be living in their own home, all because of Habitat for Humanity and community partners like Custom Blinds & Design.
When people give to Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln, they aren’t just helping a family find shelter. They’re changing the future for the next generations of this family by allowing them to grow and prosper. They’re changing entire neighborhoods by improving the quality of homes in that neighborhood. They’re empowering entire communities through housing. If you have thought of how you can make a difference in the Lincoln community, consider making a donation to Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln. You’ll be helping more families enjoy the security of their own home!
“At Custom Blinds & Design, we are grateful for having been involved with helping Martha and ensuring that her home has high-quality Hunter Douglas blinds,” added Sherri. “Thank you Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln for allowing us to be a partner in this amazing project.”
